Spring Cleaning 101: Hasta La Vista, Clutter!

The first day of spring is just around the corner and you know what that means: time for some good old spring cleaning!

A deep clean is a great way to de-clutter both your physical place AND your mind. Not sure where to begin? We’ve put together 5 steps on how you can master the so-fresh-and-so-clean this spring.

1. Start with one area at a time

Are you someone that gets overwhelmed by the thought of cleaning?

Are you a grade A procrastinator when it comes to a deep de-clutter?

If you answered yes to one or more of the above questions, then girl, you better take your time.

Meaning, don’t be over ambitious and try to clean your entire place in one day, `cause you’ll end up tearing up every part of your home and finish none of it… being left in an even worse mess.

Instead, try dedicating time to get ‘er done, piece by piece. For example, start with your bedroom. And even if you do pick one room, break it down further. Start with one area of your room (i.e. your closet from hell) and go from there.

2. You won’t need 2 of that

Please tell me why you need two working kettles. Is it in case one breaks? Well, that’s great for back up, but a total waste of space.

Get rid of the multiples. There are very few things that you need more than one of – especially big things that take up space.

Donate your duplicates to good will, sell them for some extra moolah, or give `em to a friend that could really use some extra stuff. Options are limitless, so you don’t need to toss a good working thing in the garbage.

Keep it minimal and free up that space. Less is more!

3. Let go of the sentiment

Still holding on to the plastic piece of that ring pop that little Steve gave you on your first date in grade 6? Sweet, some may say, but can I get a #hoarderalert?!

Holding onto sentimental things purely because of your emotional attachment is one of the worst and easiest ways to build up clutter in your home – you’ll just end up keeping every piece of your life!

Sure, memory boxes are cute and all, but if you’ve got a truckload full of cards and junk dating back to when you were 10, then you’ve got some major letting go to do.

4. Find a place for everything

And everything, means EVERYTHING. The trick is for every single one of your items to have its own designated spot.

When things don’t have their own place, they get tossed into drawers, and junk spaces are created. Instead, organize your space so you know where all of your things are, or should be.

And for those things that you use more often, make sure that you can easily access them. In other words: it’s not a hassle to get it, and it’s not a hassle to put it away.

If you store your scarves folded up on top of one another in a zip up bag on the top shelf of your closet, and you wear a different scarf everyday – that’s a mess in the making. Better option? Hang up your scarves in your closet individually so you can easily grab and go when you’re in a rush. Then at the end of the day, when you’re way too burnt out to grab that bag on the top shelf, you won’t need to. That’s called staying organized for your future lazy self!

5. Stop buying!

Probably the hardest one of all for all our shopaholics: put the buying on pause.

If you manage to get rid of 3 garbage bags of clothes after cleaning out your closet – that ain’t cue to go buy another 3 bags! The trick to keeping your space tidy and clutter free is to purchase only what you need.

Question whether you realllly need that pair of jeans just because it’s 25% off. Keep your closet clean and your funds high! It’s a win-win! 😉
